Firth & Foremost

Alexander Keith was born in Halkirk: a village on the River Thurso in Caithness, in the Highland council area of Scotland, 1795. He learned the trade of brewing and malting under the instruction of his uncle in Northern England before immigrating to Canada in 1817.

Upon being elected in 1843, Alexander Keith served three terms as mayor of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in addition to being a member of the Legislative Council for 30 years.

Throughout his career, Alexander Keith was connected with several charitable and fraternal societies, and was an active member of the Freemasons for many years - rising through the ranks to become Grand Master of Nova Scotia in 1869. There are four masonic lodges named in his honour: Moncton, New Brunswick, and Halifax, Stellarton, and Bear River in Nova Scotia.
